Manchester City signed off 2021 with a slender but deserved victory over Brentford to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.
With Chelsea being held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton earlier in the evening and Liverpool losing to Leicester City the previous day, Phil Foden’s solitary strike extended City’s advantage at the top of the table.

Foden steered home a deft volley from Kevin De Bruyne’s superb cross in the 16th minute to clinch Pep Guardiola’s side’s 10th consecutive win in the league shortly after the home side enjoyed what proved to be their best spell of the game.
