‘…I was overwhelmed by the dream of creation… so that such figures of dance which the world has never seen appeared from under the ground, descended from Heaven with my word…’
Isadora Duncan
The festival of Rhythmic Gymnastics at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg brings us back to the roots of the sport. Such studios as Expressive Gymnastics of François Delsarte, Dance Gymnastics of Georges Demeny, Rhythmic Gymnastics School of Emile Jacques-Dalcroze and Free Dance of Isadora Duncan became widely known in the beginning of the 20th Century. Their artistic heritage has gained recognition all over the world and, thanks to the soloists of the Mariinsky Ballet, became the basis for the development of a new sport. With this celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Rhythmic Gymnastics in Russia we would like to present you a unique theatrical show. Its characters are both famous and still very young Russian gymnasts.
Movement 1 - Isadora. Dedication
There sound some parts of a waltz by J. Brahms. In the ray of light amid the thinnest white cloth appears Isadora. Her perfect plastics charm. Performing choreographic exercises, she rapidly disappears. On the stage appear five nymphs who start moving smoothly, demonstrating their mastery of body language. The young gymnasts watching them in fascination join them. The gymnasts are approaching the nymphs and embrace them. The audience watches Isadora reappear as the embodiment of ease and grace. The gymnasts diligently repeat her choreographic motions, absorbing the divine gift of the dancer. Moving away, Isadora opens the stage and invites the audience into the wonderful world of Rhythmic Gymnastics.
Movement 2 - The Rite of Spring
‘The Rite of Spring’ by Igor Stravinsky. The philosophically rich choreographic work is the picture of the origin and flow of life, the continuous change of generations. The view of the fascinating women's world is open and made of transparent metaphors. Here balls become grains, ribbons become comets, hoops become satellites and clubs become drum sticks. The glorified female beauty is the eternal symbol of the Nature’s wisdom.
Gold, silver and bronze medallists of the Olympic Games and World Champions appear in the images of Goddesses. The Prima Donna Maria Gulegina performs the immortal ‘Casta Diva’ from ‘Norma’ by Vincenzo Bellini in honor of the Champions.
Movement 3 - Bolero
The world’s best acting gymnasts alternately appear on the stage. The performance of each participating country is preceded by a choreographic composition by Russian gymnasts.
Movement 4 - Glory!
There sounds the immortal work of Mikhail Glinka performed by the Mariinsky Choir and conducted by Maestro Valery Gergiev. All participants come out to the stage. This Anthem to the greatness and beauty of life completes the enchanting journey through years.
