Diesel vehicles are required to be fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in the exhaust system to reduce emissions. The DPF software monitors the level of trapped particles. To prevent obstruction to the free flow of exhaust gases, the DPF cleans itself by burning off the particles at high temperatures.
This process is known as filter regeneration, and there are two types: passive and active. If you regularly drive at low engine loads in urban traffic, the particles build up more rapidly. Watch this video to understand the technology behind the DPF.
