Ⓔ Messi's path to pole position for 5th Ballon d'Or. Leo Messi is being hotly tipped to win the 2015 Ballon d'Or, which would mean lifting for a fifth time a prize that he made his own for four straight editions from 2009 to 2012. The bookies have him down as the favourite, as do the majority of expert observers from the football world.
The Argentine was inspirational in Barcelona's run to the treble, producing scintillating performances and some extraordinarily beautiful goals at key junctures.
Messi's second effort against Bayern Munich in the first leg of last term's Champions League semi-finals was named the UEFA Goal of the Season, while his opener in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic is in contention for the 2015 Puskás Award.
The only blots on an otherwise impeccable copybook came in the Spanish Super Cup, where Barça were beaten by Athletic, and the Copa América final, in which Argentina lost to hosts Chile on penalties. Though Messi has missed a couple of months of this season through injury, he has come back in as fine shape as ever, as evidenced by his 'Clásico' cameo at the Santiago Bernabéu and his subsequent displays against Roma and Real Sociedad.
